128 129 Many medical publications have shown that physical exercise is a fundamental aspect in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, because it improves the tolerance to glucose and the sensitivity to insulin. Besides, in the metabolic forms it reduces the risk of developing the diabetes disease. On this basis, diverse specific studies have assessed the impact of Nordic Walking on the metabolic syndrome and on diabetes mellitus, showing the beneficial effects of this sport as a real therapy. For this reason Scuola italiana Nordic Walking has established the project “Nordic Walking Diab”, a real specialisation course for the instructors who want to bring their activities to the Associations of diabetic patients and/or to the Diabetes Centres, to propose this sporty practice not only as a tool for well-being but also as an efficient care tool. The project involves the organisation of tours during which the participants are guided from a technical–sporty point of view and at the same time they are educated in the correct management of diabetes through the glucose monitoring.
